Chapter Fifteen
Maxine saw that she had a message on her cell phone when she got back to her desk in her office. She kept her pager on vibrate and her cell phone off whenever she was with a patient. They deserved her full attention. There was a message from Betina, so she dialed the number to the salon.
âHair Today,â Joey said.
âItâs Maxine. Is Betina there?â
âSheâs with a client, but she can usually trim locks and chat on the phone at the same time. Hold on. Oh, by the way,â he said in a hushed tone. âWhatever you said to her has made a huge difference. Sheâs been to work on time two days in a row now and she hasnât been as spacey these past few days.â
âShe went to the doctor for some tests yesterday,â Maxine said, âso hopefully sheâll be feeling better soon.â
âWhat? Yesterday? I donât think so,â Joey said. âI was with her all day yesterday. She didnât see any doctor.â
Momentarily speechless, Maxine eased down on the corner of her desk.
âWe closed up the shop late and loaded all the stuff we needed for Blue Hair Night,â Joey continued. âThen we stopped for a quick dinner at the Bean Sprout Chinese place down the street. Trust me. She didnât have time to see a doctor yesterday.â
Maxine gripped the phone so hard her hand began to hurt. She put the phone against her other ear and got more comfortable on the corner of her desk.
âMaybe she went to the doctor early.â
âI woke her up at seven,â Joey said.
âWhat time did she get to work?â
âAbout eight-thirty. She even picked up breakfast for us, but you know how it usually takes her forever to get ready in the morning. We both got to work early because we started packing things for Blue Hair Night before our first appointments of the day arrived.â
âWhen she got to the shop, did you notice a Band-Aid on her arm?â
âNo. Not that I remember.â
âThen maybe she went to the doctor after leaving the restaurant yesterday evening.â
There was a pause. âYeah, maybe,â Joey said skeptically.
Thatâs probably what happened, she thought. Betina left the restaurant and went to her appointment after work.
âLet me talk to her,â Maxine said.
âWait a minute. Did she tell you she went to the doctor yesterday?â
âLet me talk to her.â
âUh-oh. I hear polar cap-sized icicles in your voice. You have to forget whatever stupid thing I just said, Maxie.â
âPut her on the phone.â
âItâs for you,â Joey called across the salon, now suddenly very willing to get rid of the phone.
âTake a message,â Maxine heard Betina say.
âYou better take this one.â
âWho is it?â
âMaxie.â
âTell her Iâll call her back. Iâm busy right now.â
âYou need to tell her yourself.â
âWhat theââ
Maxine heard grumbling and then the light clickity-click sound of Betinaâs heels across the tiled floor. Betina picked up the phone and said, âHi, baby. Can I call you back? Iâm in the middle of something.â
âIâm returning your call. I have a quick question for you.â
âOh! I have one for you, too.
